Mikala was sick of smiling, laughing at bad jokes, and playing the part of Dad’s side chick for the idiots who truly believed he would bring his lover to a business conference and then introduce her as his lover.

Almost every man present had given Dad a sly smile and a wink when he’d introduced Mikala as his daughter. She was. Everyone always commented how much she resembled her father—the same amber eyes and dimpled smile. But maybe that was hard to see in a room with mood lighting. All black people looked alike, after all. But they wouldn’t believe she was eighteen and newly graduated.

Instead they thought she was some twenty-something Dad had decided to flaunt, and Mikala had stupidly played along with their misconceptions. It had been funny at first. Dad had taken a moment to catch on to the joke but then he played right along with her, sharing quick kisses that were no different from the ones they had at home but looked like love pecks to those who believed the lie. She and Dad had danced close and she’d cuddled his arm all night while people—men and women alike—had congratulated Dad on his conquest.

Mikala just wanted this night to be over. She wanted the whole conference to be over. There were still three days left. Three more days of playing the role she’d cast herself in and wouldn’t be able to get out of without a lot of drama and possibly damaging Dad’s business relationships with these people.

The elevator dinged and Mikala almost gave a joyful whoop when the doors opened. Just a few more steps to the room and she could drop this façade.

“You two have a good night,” said the man sharing the elevator with them. He wiggled his eyebrows when Dad glanced at him, licking his lips as he dragged his leering gaze over Mikala.

She tamped the urge to making gagging noises. She’d been putting up with this behavior all night—people openly treating her like a piece of meat. A few more seconds wouldn’t kill her. She forced another smile. “You can bet we will. Won’t we, Daddy?”

Dad moved the hand on her hip to her ass and gave her left cheek a squeeze. “Count on it.”

He let her go once they were inside their room—the other source of Mikala’s annoyance. Instead of the two queen beds Dad had booked, they’d gotten stuck with a single king. It wasn’t like they hadn’t slept in the same bed before. The king was simply another reminder of how wrong this evening had gone.

Mikala just wanted to go to sleep and forget everything. She toed off her heels and flipped them under the desk so they weren’t underfoot. Turning her back to Dad, she lifted her mid-back length black curls to the side. “Unzip, please.”

Dad came up behind her and pulled the long zipper down to her tailbone. Spreading the dress open, he placed a kiss on the back of her neck.

Mikala giggled at his unexpected show of affection. “What was that for?”

“For being beautiful and charming.”

She glowed under Dad’s compliment. She was daddy’s little girl, after all. His praise meant a lot to her. She always wanted him to be proud of her.

He slipped his fingers under the edges of the dress and smoothed it off her shoulders, placing light kisses on both of them. “You were also sexy as hell.”

Mikala’s smile faltered. “Huh?”
