Rachel Burton is a British author of historical time-slip novels and romantic comedies. She is best known for The Secrets of Summer House (2022), The Last Party at Silverton Hall (2023) and The Mystery of Haverford House (2024). Her latest novel, The Butterfly Garden, was published by Boldwood Books in July 2024.
Rachel Burton was born in Cambridge and grew up surrounded by books and music. A love of reading marked her childhood. "It has gone down in family history that whenever something interesting happened, I missed it because I had my nose in a book," she has said. She studied classics and English literature at university before unexpectedly finding herself in the legal profession. But her passion for storytelling remained, and she wrote her debut novel during her lunch breaks.
Her first book, The Many Colours of Us (2017), combined her interests in art, fashion and lost letters. It was inspired by a house she visited as a teenager, which became central to the novel's setting. Rachel has described this debut as her favourite: "It's also the book that has the most bits of me in it.
In 2020, Rachel moved to Head of Zeus. She published The Tearoom on the Bay, The Summer Island Festival and A Bookshop Christmas with them, earning praise for her heartfelt and engaging storytelling. In 2022, she moved on to historical time travel novels, beginning with The Secrets of Summer House.
Her novels often explore themes of family, hidden histories, and the secrets of old houses. Rachel describes her fascination with these elements as follows: "I am obsessed with old houses and the secrets they hold, with abandoned gardens and locked gates, with family histories and surprising revelations.
Her latest novel, The Mystery of Haverford House (2024), has been hailed as her best yet. It follows two intertwined timelines, revealing love, loss and haunting secrets that span generations. Critics praised it as "beautiful" and "gripping", with a "page-turning plot".
Rachel Burton lives in Yorkshire with her husband, several cats and a vast book collection.
